About

A living lab for public participation

TIAS lab is a living laboratory for public participation. We design and run real participation processes such as citizen science, citizen assemblies and stakeholder engagement, and we study them as they happen. Each action is connected to the others, so what we learn in one shapes how we design the next. TIAS lab is part of the Postgrowth Innovation Lab at the Universidade de Vigo.

The idea

What is a living lab?

A living lab treats everyday life as the laboratory. Rather than studying participation only in theory, we work with citizens, researchers and institutions on genuine processes and observe how they actually unfold.

Our actions are linked, not isolated. The know-how built in one, such as how to recruit, how to deliberate and how to turn outcomes into action, feeds the next. The lab grows a shared, evolving understanding of how people take part.

How we work

Design · Run · Study

A simple cycle runs through every action in the lab.

1 · Design

We co-design each process with the communities and institutions it concerns, choosing formats that fit the question and the people.

2 · Run

We facilitate the process in the real world: citizen science campaigns, assemblies, workshops and focus groups.

3 · Study

We analyse what happened and share the learning openly through reports and academic publications.
